Easy Autumn Photo Ideas to Fall in Love With

21st September 2020

Head outdoors this season and have fun with your own autumn photoshoot. It’s easy to do with the help of our simple autumn photo ideas, tips and tricks.

As the nights are getting longer and leaves are already starting to fall, the autumn season is well and truly underway. Think Halloween, pumpkin spice lattes, chunky knitted jumpers, and the leaves turning beautiful shades of orange and red. Autumn has so much to offer and is the perfect time to put your photography skills to the test. Here are a few autumn photography tips and tricks to get you started.

Go Wild for Our Fall Photoshoot Ideas

The autumn landscape is a photographer’s dream, providing a plethora of beautiful colours, from red to yellow, brown to burnt orange. Get out in nature in the morning or evening sun to capture these incredible colours at their best. The soft glow from the low sun will make the colours pop.

Go for a walk with your loved ones through wild forests and woods to be amongst the autumnal colours and hear the crunch of the leaves beneath your feet. You’ll be met with so many options of what to capture, from your partner or child walking through the tall forest trees to your dog playing in the fallen leaves on the ground. Whatever the shot, be ready to capture the moment in the golden sun.

Tip 1: The best camera settings for fall foliage is to use a low ISO. On your mobile, you can do this by adjusting the exposure. This will bring out the best colours and keeps your photos looking sharp.

Make the Most of the Autumnal Weather

Wrap up warm and head out early to take advantage of foggy mornings – it’s a great time to capture moody shots of autumn fields or misty woods, as well as any wildlife that is on the move at that time!

Don’t shy away from the sun as it begins to rise. If you act quickly, you can photograph some stunning, mystical shots of sun rays streaming through the fog and onto the autumnal forest floor.

Tip 2: Be sure to check the weather in advance to avoid disappointment. You’ll want to look out for mornings that increase in temperature quickly following on from a cold night. Read our blog on fog photography for more tips and the best camera settings.

Reflect the Autumn Landscape

One of our favourite fall photoshoot ideas is to head to your nearest natural pond or lake and get creative with those reflections! The autumnal colours from surrounding trees will ripple across the water whilst adding more of those beautiful hues of reds and oranges into your frame.

The best time to capture these autumnal reflection shots are during golden hour as the sun begins to set, making the colours even more vibrant on the ground and across the water. For example, get creative with movement, sending ripples across the water to bring the shot to life. Look around for beautiful, fresh fallen leaves and gently place one on the surface of the water (or even in a puddle!) Get the most out of your shot with macro photography, capturing the detail of the leaf and reflection up-close. We recommend shooting in Aperture Priority mode and increasing your ISO settings when in low light.

Tip 3: Remember to adapt your exposure to suit the changing light levels as the sun sets.

Autumnal Fun for All the Family

Photoshoots in the summer can be too tiresome and hot for the kids, and winter can be too cold – that’s why autumn is the perfect time to get outdoors and capture some beautiful fall photography as a family.

This in-between season is a haven for providing natural autumn photography props, and therefore great photo opportunities. It’s a perfect wonderland for fun with leaves, whether it’s kicking, throwing or jumping in a huge pile!

Get wrapped up in your woollen knits and scarves and head to a nearby pumpkin patch for the ultimate autumn photoshoot. Pre-plan what you’ll wear: think flannel or navy tones to truly make the orange hues stand out. Alternatively, pick up a pumpkin to carve at home with the kids and capture the memory forever.

Tip 4: When playing in the autumn leaves, use a fast shutter speed with low ISO to freeze the movement and avoid blurring.

Utilise the Whole Autumn Landscape

There’s no denying that autumn is a pretty spectacular time of year to photograph. The photoshoot opportunities are endless. Don’t forget to pause for a moment to take it all in – capture the full autumn landscape to enjoy the multitude of colours all year round.

When it comes to autumn landscape photography, make use of natural lines like rivers, trees and mountains to compose your shot. Footpaths through woodland and winding roads framed with fall foliage are great man-made lines to look out for too. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the whole scene from a distance, or opt for a longer focal length lens to truly capture the autumn landscape at its best.

Tip 5: Once you’ve made the most of your fall photoshoot, enhance your autumn photos to their best ability with post-processing editing. Bring the vibrant colours of your autumnal shot to life with small adjustments to the exposure, warmth and contrast, as well as targeted amends to the saturation of warm tones. You can even try toning down cooler colours in the photo by reducing the saturation. Have a play with these settings in a free editing tool like Lightroom or even using the manual editing tool in Instagram.

We hope you feel inspired to get out this autumn and give one of our five awesome autumn photography tips a go! If you do, don’t forget to share your stunning autumnal shots with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
